The Video:

Legendary label Delicious Vinyl is rolling high with some serious talent on their roster. Golden boys Illa J and Aaron LaCrate recently stopped in at the Boombox Music Blog studio for an interview and a little taste of goods to come.

The Background:

When Jay Dee passed away from complications relating to lupus in February 2006, he left behind an extraordinary legacy of production work, including hits for Common, Janet Jackson, and Busta Rhymes. One mother lode of previously untouched beats dates from his time working on the Pharcyde’s sophomore album, Labcabincalifornia (Delicious Vinyl, 1995). As Delicious Vinyl owner and founder Michael “Mike Floss” Ross explains: “From ‘95 through ‘98 Jay Dee was my go-to guy for hot beats and remixes. He was always making beats, always. So there was a select amount of tracks that he composed for me during that time, tracks as good as anything he’d done, only they never got used. When I finally met Illa J last year, I gave him a CD containing those unreleased beats.”

In a case of pure serendipity, 21 year-old Illa J had just relocated from Detroit to Los Angeles and constructed a studio built using Jay Dee’s recording equipment. He dubbed it Yancey Boys Studios in tribute to their fraternal bond. “Dilla was 12 years older than me,” Illa J says. “So back in the day in Detroit I was just a little kid, sitting on the stairs in our house, watching him make those first beats for Slum Village. I always felt my brother’s tracks and had an instinct for what I wanted to do over them.” When Illa J set to work in early ‘08 recording the album, the project flowed quickly as he entered the proverbial can’t miss zone. The name of the studio rightly became the title of the finished album, Yancey Boys, which will be released on November 4th, 2008 via Delicious Vinyl.

(October 8, 2007 – Brooklyn, NY) Producer, MC, and vanguard of Detroit’s rising hip-hop scene, Black Milk will embark on a mini-tour of Europe featuring fellow heavy hitters Guilty Simpson and Bishop Lamont and special guests eLZhi and Sean Price on additional U.S. dates. The “Caltroit” Tour will consist of eight dates in major European cities including Amsterdam, Paris and Zurich. The tour is in support of Black Milk and Bishop Lamont’s duo album Caltroit, Black Milk’s highly anticipated solo album Tronic, and Guilty Simpson’s critically acclaimed debut album Ode To The Ghetto.

When discussing the tour, Black said, “It is always good to go to Europe because there is so much energy in the crowd and so much love over there.” Since releasing Caltroit with Bishop Lamont in 2007, the duo have not joined together on a tour. The tour will offer fans a chance to finally see Black and Bishop performing their songs together.

In only a few short years, Black Milk quickly has become one of underground hip-hop’s foremost ambassadors since the release of his debut solo album Popular Demand. Realizing his vast reservoir of talent, both independent and mainstream artists looked to Black to give their albums a raw underground sound. Black has since produced and appeared on tracks for an impressive roster of hip hop artists including Genius/GZA, Busta Rhymes, Pharoahe Monch, Kidz in the Hall, Kardinal Offishall, Guilty Simpson, and Strange Fruit Project, among others. Most recently, Black released two albums, The Set Up with Fat Ray and Black Milk Presents Caltroit with Bishop Lamont. Black also handed nearly all the production on elZhi’s The Preface, an album that is making many critics’ Top 10 lists for 2008 and bringing serious attention to Detroit’s music scene. Black also produces and rhymes as a member of the ground Random Axe with Sean Price and Guilty Simpson and will release a full-length album in early 2009. TRONIC will be released on CD, vinyl, and digitally via Fat Beats Records on October 28, 2008.
