Blue ScholarsFebruary 15, 2008

Blue Scholars left a wall-to-wall packed crowd spittin’ their verses and wanting to hear more. The dynamic performance from the hip hop duo from Seattle was like electric, its contagious energy transmitting through every single person present, moving each spirit with musical ease.

Blue Scholars’ emcee Geologic spits with a poetic lyrical brilliance, while DJ Sabzi produces ill beats that transcend through every musical genre, resulting in a hop-hop sound all their own, and yet still resembling the classical sounds of hip-hop music.

“The Ave”, “Fire for the People,” “Back Home,” and “Still Got Love” were a few of the hot tracks performed that had the crowd in a frenzy.  Blue Scholars, well known for their storytelling about struggle and the working class (hence, Blue Scholar) was formed in 2002 and has since released two albums: “Blue Scholar,” “Bayani” and a third in the works for a 2009 release.

When asked about the Hip Hop scene in Seattle, Geo describes it as “bubbling”, alluding to its musical potential, thus an area often overlooked. When asked, “What do you want listeners to know about your music?” Sabzi comments Blue Scholars’ music is the peoples’ message without being too preachy or pretentious, and that their music tells the truth, in a world where people don’t do that often, in hopes that their music channels ways to do some good.

Blue Scholars future projects include overseas traveling, an EP titled, “Butter&Gun$,” with a soon-to-be released new video titled, “Loyalty.” In the meantime, Geo and Sabzi will be touring and performing at local venues around the country.

SELF MADE DEBUT ALBUM ARRIVES IN STORES MARCH 18th ON ROCKO’s ROCKY ROAD/ISLAND URBAN IMPRINT

Behind-the-scenes Atlanta-based hitmaker-turned-artist Rocko has worked with Hitman Sammy Sam, Dem Franchize Boyz, Young Dro, Lil’ Flip, Pastor Troy

(Feb. 25, 2008 – New York, NY) Proving that a workaholic ethic is the key to success, Rocko steps out from behind the scenes – as an Atlanta-based artist manager, songwriter, promoter, and head of his own label (Rocky Road) – with his smash debut single as a recording artist on Island Urban, “Umma Do Me,” which moves up to #11-bullet on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Songs charts, in its 12th week out. The video for “Umma Do Me” has entered BET’s “106 & Park” countdown at #10.

“Umma Do Me,” produced by Drumma Boi, is the first single pick from Rocko’s debut album, SELF MADE, arriving in stores March 18th on Rocky Road/Island Urban. “Umma Do Me,” he told Billboard, “was a song I recorded for the streets, and it took off from there… I never meant for it to be a single.” Accidental hit or not, the song cracks the market wide open for SELF MADE, which (also) features production from Cool and Dre, the Runners, Jazze Pha and DJ Toomp. “This album is colossal. It’s much bigger and crazier than that,” he says, referring to the single. “It’s about real-life situations.”

SELF MADE lives up to its title, reflecting Rocko’s rise to the top of the game, a deal-maker who has been putting together hits for most of the millennium. He learned to write and format songs and create beats, while serving as a talent scout for Universal Music. His first act was Hitman Sammy Sam, whose novelty “Step Daddy” earned a deal with Universal. Sam’s 2002 debut album was the first to bear the Rocky Road imprint.

In 2003, Rocko’s first mixtape, NWA (No Wack Artist) featured Juvenile, Turk, Jazze Pha, Bone Crusher, and others. In the interim, continuing to work with Universal, Rocko was connected to deals with Dem Franchize Boyz (their self-titled debut, 2004) and Young Dro (signed to Atlanta-based T.I.’s Grand Hustle label in 2006, distributed by Atlantic). Rocko’s production company also tracked songs for Lil’ Flip and Pastor Troy.

But it was last year’s Swag Season, Rocko’s second mixtape, featuring Jim Jones, Rick Ross, Gotti, and Shawty Lo – along with the original version of “Umma Do Me” – that blew up the scene. 300 spins deep, “Umma Do Me” piqued the interest of fellow Atlien Jermaine Dupri, president of Island So So Def. After Atlanta’s premiere hip-hop magazine Ozone put Rocko on the cover, Def Jam Senior VP of A&R Shakir Stewart brought Rocko to New York to meet Antonio “L.A.” Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group. “They had their mind made up,” Rocko says. “I couldn’t even leave the building.”

A ten-year veteran of Atlanta’s competitive hip-hop arena, 29-year old Rocko (Rodney Hill) got his start after graduating high school and working at local jobs. A decade later, his ascension to major label status bears witness to his ambition and talent. “I am going in and mastering my craft daily,” he told Billboard. “Now there’s no turning back.”

Music from Volume 2 Includes Tracks Previously Only Available on Limited Edition 7″ Singles Plus Brand New Tracks

(Brooklyn, NY -February 25, 2008) Brooklyn-based record label Truth & Soul will release their Fallin’ Off the Reel Vol. 2 compilation CD on March 11th. The compilation features a combination of tracks from a variety of funk and soul artists that had previously been exclusively available as 7″ singles as well as new tracks from celebrated groups El Michels Affair and Bronx River Parkway. Truth and Soul’s involvement with releases from Amy Winehouse and members of Wu-Tang Clan, as well as their reputation for releasing high quality soul and funk music, makes the release of this compilation highly anticipated.

Fallin’ Off the Reel Vol. 2 follows the success of Truth and Soul’s first edition of the compilation, Fallin’ Off the Reel, released in the fall of 2006. The forthcoming second-edition Truth and Soul compilation boasts a varied roster of current-day and older funk and soul artists, including Timothy McNealy, El Michels Affair, Bronx River Parkway, Lee Fields & The Expressions, Tyrone Ashley’s Funk Music Machine, Black Velvet, Quincy Bright and The Fabulous Three. From the laid-back, stripped-down soul tune “I’m So Glad You’re Mind” by Timothy McNealy to the hip-hop influenced, Hispanic funk groove “La Valla” by Bronx River Parkway ft. Jose Parla, the compilation comprises a wide selection of contemporary music that has descended from the rhythm and blues, soul and funk music traditions. Fallin’ Off The Reel Vol. 2 has every Truth & Soul 45 single presented in chronological order from 2006 until now (available for the first time on CD), including one previously unreleased bonus track.

About Truth & Soul: When Soul Fire Records officially retired in 2004, Soul Fire house musicians Leon Michels and Jeff Silverman started their own label, Truth & Soul, which has now become a label and production house based out of Brooklyn, NY that specializes in creating deep funk and soul music. They have released a slew of 7″ and 12″ vinyl releases by bands such as El Michels Affair, Bama & The Family, Lee Fields & the Expressions, Timothy McNealy, Asiko, Bronx River Parkway, and many more. Both Michels and Silverman produce, perform on, engineer, and mix all of the label’s releases and productions.
